Can you bring up a baby on a budget

Cathy Jones

NEW parents can easily find themselves splashing out more than a thousand pounds on equipment for their impending arrivals only to find they've wasted some of it on stuff they just don't need.

So we asked specialist nursery advisor Cathy Jones, who works at John Lewis in Solihull, for some tips. Cathy, who's spent 10 years helping parents navigate the maze of what to buy, says: "If you are preparing for the arrival of your first baby, making choices about what to buy can be overwhelming.

"Some pieces of equipment are essential purchases, while others are simply nice to have.

"Other things, like high chairs and stair gates, you don't necessarily need to buy straight away.

"My job is to help parents get all the essentials first so they can spend time choosing those little extras."

SO WHERE DO YOU START?

* PUSHCHAIR PANIC

FROM prams to travel systems, it can feel like you need a degree when it comes to choosing something to push your bundle of joy around in these days because there's so much on offer.

Parents shouldn't make the mistake of opting for the most eye-catching pram or pushchair though, warns Cathy.

Asking yourself a few simple questions about how you will use your pram, pushchair or buggy could save you a fortune.

Cathy explains: "Where you live and like to visit will determine whether you need an all terrain system or one suited mainly to the pavement. "It's also important to consider whether you have steps or stairs to negotiate or intend to travel by public transport. If so, the pram and pushchair weight and size will be of greater importance to you."

It's vital parents make sure prams and pushchairs fit the boot of their car before they buy them, advises Cathy, and make sure they're not too heavy to lift.

She adds: "Parents have bought travel systems, for instance, only to find they're too big for their car.

"Always get a full demonstration of any pram or pushchair and have a go yourself.

"Even the height of a couple can make a difference to what they choose."

* POPULAR PRODUCTS

IF YOU WALK A LOT: choose a sturdy model with lockable wheels.

TRY: The Quinny Buzz Pushchair £329 (suitable from 6 months), which can be unfolded with just one hand.

IF YOU USE A CAR: you'll still need to transport your baby around town on foot so consider a multi-functional travel system, a baby car seat which can be attached to a pushchair.

TRY: The Maxi-Cosi Cabriofix infant carrier £105 (suitable from birth to 13kg).

It can be used in a car with an EasyFix base (sold separately) or a 3-point seat belt. It's compatible with the Maxi-Cosi, Bugaboo, Micralite and the Quinny Buzz and Zapp chassis to create a travel system.

IF YOU GO BY BUS: or need to negotiate steps - a lightweight and compact folding pram or pushchair's best.

TRY: The Bugaboo Bee stroller £359 (suitable from birth).

* CAR SEATS

IF you plan to take your newborn home by car you won't be allowed to unless you've got a car seat in place. So be prepared!

For a young child, weight, not age, is the critical factor in deciding which car seat is suitable and safe.

Safety campaigners say a worrying number of parents fit car seats incorrectly. There's no substitute for expert advice.

Babies are much safer travelling in rear-facing car seats, known as infant carriers. But they can't be used in seats protected by an airbag.

All cars made since February 2006 have to be equipped with Isofix systems, which makes fitting car seats quick, simple and safe because the seats click directly to the car. Others are secured by belts.

* A GOOD NIGHT'S SLEEP

ANYTHING which encourages your little bundle of joy to sleep has got to be worth its weight in gold.

Experts recommend that babies sleep in the same room as their parents for the first six months. So rather than splash out on a full size cot, most parents opt for a crib or Moses basket to start off with.

Cathy says: "For parents who want their baby to sleep in their bedroom to begin with, the size of your bedroom will determine whether you purchase a Moses basket, crib, cot or cot bed.

"If you have stairs and want to take baby downstairs with you at times, then a Moses basket may be a good option as it is easier to transport.

"If you're borrowing a crib or Moses basket we always recommend buying a new mattress. We always tell parents to familiarise themselves with the correct sleeping position for a young baby, the ideal temperature for the room as well as how temperature influences bedding layers too."

TRY: Woodland Moses basket £70.

* HOT AND COLD

CATHY advises parents to buy a thermometer to check the temperature of their baby's room.

She explains: "The recommended temperature is 18C so it's important parents know how hot or cold it is.

"That way they can adjust the heating, the baby's clothes and bedding.

"You can pick up a basic thermometer for £3. Some of the baby monitors come with them built-in." TRY: Grobag Colour Changing Room Thermometer and Night Light £19.95.

* WHAT TO WEAR

CATHY says: "It's amazing just how much clothing people think a tiny person needs!

"We help parents to decide on the essentials. Most of the time that's easy care cotton clothing, in particular bodysuits and vests, babygrows and sleepsuits, cardigans, hats, outdoor wear, scratch mitts and bibs. We always suggest finding out if there are any knitters in the family too."

TRY: Pack of 7 white short-sleeved 100 per cent cotton bodysuits £8.

TRY: Baby's Knit a Blanket or Jacket Kit £9.95.

* SPLASHING OUT

CATHY says: "There are many questions to consider when bathing a baby. I ask parents to think about where they will do it.

"Will the bath suffice using a bath support or do they need to buy a baby bath or Tummy Tub?

"The Tummy Tub is a change of direction, looking rather like a large bowl, where the baby stays in a more upright fetal position.

"It's thought to be more comfortable and less stressful for the baby. Parents may wish to buy a few baby towels with hooded corners which are very cute and practical too."

A bath thermometer's essential, adds Cathy.

You can also pick up an easy clean changing mat for £12.

TRY: Tummy Tub Bath £18.95

AND: John Lewis Towelling Cuddle Robes (pack of 2) £16.

* NAPPY FAMILIES

CONCERN about the impact of disposable nappies on the environment means more parents are looking for an alternative.

Gone are the days when reusable nappies meant reaching for the terry towelling and nappy pins.

Cathy says: "It's not like years ago. The modern reusable nappies include all-in-one systems which are similar to disposables.

TRY: Bambino Mio Nappy Set, Newborn 3-5kg (6-11lb) £39.95.

* DON'T MISS A THING

FOR peace of mind when your baby's upstairs asleep out of earshot a baby monitor's a must.

Prices for a basic listening device, such as the Fisher-Price Sounds n Lights, start from £19.95.

* EXPERT ADVICE

TO book an appointment with a nursery advisor at John Lewis' Solihull store call Cathy Jones on 0121 709 6838 extension 4571 or visit www.johnlewis nurserylist.com.

Consultations are free and last up to two hours during which you can put together a wish list which you can view online.

Buy Toys Highly recommended

Highly recommended but watch out for the little ones!4

This a wonderful outdoor toy that's easy to set up, good exercise, fun and improves hand-eye coordination. My only complaint - and it's a big one - is that it's a very dangerous toy for anyone under 5-6 buy toys (it does carry an age restriction on the box!) as the fast-swinging tennis ball easily hits unwary children's eyes and heads. Adult supervision a must

Baby-proofing big business

Baby-proofing big business

By JOHN ANASTASI
Bucks County Courier Times

Baby-proofing the house has become big business not only for the companies that produce home safety products, but for a growing number of baby-proofing professionals.

“Child safety has become a big issue,” said Mark Gottlieb, who runs Upper Southampton's Safe at Home Baby-Proofing. “These days, you've got both parents working, they're living in larger homes than before and there's more reliance on babysitters.”

Gottlieb started his baby-proofing business 11 years ago. It is a full-time job. His services include safety gates for stairways, latches that secure cabinets and drawers and door locks.

“I have grandchildren myself and you really need to be aware of child safety [issues],” he said. “People aren't aware of all the little pitfalls.”

Gottlieb said he started his business just as baby-proofing professionals were organizing the International Association for Child Safety. The nonprofit trade group promotes education about child safety issues and provides a forum for companies to communicate with each other.

“There were 42 companies when I joined. Now there are 150,” he said.

Every year, about 2 million children under the age of 5 are treated in emergency rooms for injuries that occur at home, according to the association.

Gottlieb serves Bucks, Montgomery and Philadelphia counties in Pennsylvania and Camden County in New Jersey. He has clients fill out a survey about their homes and then he provides them with a list that shows what baby-proofing options are available and how much each one costs.

“The customer can pick and choose what they want to do,” he said.

For do-it-yourselfers, stores like Babies R Us, which has locations in Falls and Bensalem, stock a variety of baby-proofing products.

They include straps that prevent furniture from toppling over, corner guards that attach to the edges of tables and other items, outlet covers that prevent children from shocking themselves, knob covers that stop them from turning on the stove and toilet seat latches that keep the lid down.

“Safety items are always very popular,” said Babies R Us spokeswoman Jamie Beal. “They sell very well. September is [National] Baby Safety Month, but these are always big things [people buy].”

Serious household accidents have occurred locally.

Among them is a January 2005 accident in which a 3-year-old Abington girl was killed when a large, mirrored wardrobe fell on her. Following the accident, the girl's parents — Judy and Bob Lambert — founded the Katie Elise Lambert Foundation in their daughter's name.

Since the nonprofit was started, it has worked to raise awareness of various household dangers and has pushed pediatricians to cover baby-proofing topics during children's checkups.

Common child injuries

  • Falls, usually on steps or from furniture or windows

  • Accidental poisoning

  • Burns from the stove, hot liquids, steam or from electrical current

  • Choking

  • Drowning

  • Finger and head entrapments

  • Toppling of furniture or appliances such as TVs

Baby traffickers arrested on China-Vietnam border

Chinese and Vietnamese police have arrested six baby traffickers in a border town and rescued two newborn baby boys, Vietnamese authorities said.

The four men and two women, all Vietnamese, were arrested in the Chinese border town of Dongxing and handed to Vietnamese police, who had tipped off their counterparts, said a police officer in the Vietnamese town of Mong Cai.

"We have a cooperation hotline with the local Chinese police. With their help, the smugglers were arrested on Monday," said the Quang Ninh province police officer who asked not to be named.

The suspected baby smugglers, who were aged between 15 and 66, were transferred to provincial police for further investigation. The two babies were turned over to a social welfare centre, the officer said.

"This is the third baby trafficking case we have detected this year, bringing the number of rescued babies to five," he said.

Vietnamese police busted a trafficking syndicate in February, which sold babies to China for adoption, reportedly charging about $US500 each for girls and $US1,000 for boys.

The US embassy in Hanoi recently issued a damning report about widespread baby selling and rampant corruption in the adoption system in Vietnam, which led Hanoi to cancel a bilateral adoption agreement.

Great gear when traveling with children

After almost 10 years of traveling around the country and to Europe with children, I have learned this: Less is more.

All that stuff you hear about packing little toys for kids to unwrap on the airplane or stocking up on travel games to play in the car is, in my experience, pretty much useless. Such things will distract the kids for about 10 seconds and leave parents with more stuff to clean up. Snacks are important, especially on planes where food is increasingly limited, but jamming a thousand toys into a backpack or buying every new travel gadget on the market is only going to ensure that you have more stuff to keep track of.

Which isn't to say I'm anti-stuff. I live and die by the portable DVD player, two if your kids are at an age, as mine are, when they will fight about the air molecules they breathe. Books are good, though remember it's always fun to buy new books on your travels, so you don't have to take a library. Ditto for crayons and a coloring book. If your child is consistently soothed by a stuffed animal or two, by all means take them. My kids tend while packing to develop sudden attachments to toys they then ignore or lose during the trip, so our stuffies stay home.

Still, the questions most parents ask of those who have traveled more or farther most often begin with "Should I bring ..." the stroller, the car seat, the portable crib. Here, based on this mom's experience, is a brief guide to good travel stuff.

CARRIER

For infants, I swear by the Baby Bjorn Infant Carrier ($79 to $99 at www.babiesrus.com), which keeps your hands free, the baby warm and takes up no room. When we went to Paris with our 2-month-old, we didn't bother with a stroller (which is a pain in any city with a subway or metro -- all those steps). Because it was winter, we also got a Baby Bjorn carrier cover ($39 at www.babierus.com), which kept little Darby warm and dry. (You know you have made a good purchase when a Parisian mother asks you where you got something.)

For older kids, if you are going to do a lot of hiking, a Kelty Child Carrier backpack ($119 to $240 at Sport Chalet, www.sportchalet.com) is a must. Yes, you tough dads can go miles with a kid on your shoulders, but when that kid falls asleep (and he or she will), you are balancing a sack of cement on your head.

STROLLER

When your baby is too heavy or squirmy for a Baby Bjorn, you need a stroller, and if you're going to travel a lot or go to places with cobblestones or off-road walking, you should invest in a really good umbrella stroller. I have a Chicco C6 ($59.99 at www.amazon.com) that works well, and Maclaren has great lightweight portable urban strollers ( www.amazon.com, $174.95).blogger said : Cheap triple Strollers Here !

CAR SEAT

The great debate -- take or rent. I say take. You can check them with your luggage or at the gate, and nothing's worse than renting an infant seat you don't like or trust. Also, the car seat guarantees you have somewhere safe to put an infant when you're in your hotel room or apartment, which is nice. For older kids, a very cool thing is a Gogo Kidz Travelmate ($89 at www.gogobabyz.com) -- a car seat that turns into a stroller by pulling out a handle and wheels. Although it's too low to the ground to act as a real stroller, it is great for airports. And if the airline allows it, putting a car seat in the plane seat makes things much easier. Your child is more secure, for one thing, and there is a soporific effect about a car seat that cannot be overlooked.

GROBAG

These British zippered blankets are like big sleep sacks, and they come in handy because they will keep a child as warm as any blanket and not fall off during the night or get lost during the flight. Get a size up from your child's regular size, and it will also work in a stroller. At $55 ( www.amazon.com or www.gro-group.co.uk), they aren't cheap, but they're worth it.

PORTABLE CRIB

Leave it at home. Most hotels and rentals will provide a crib, and even the good portables are heavy and bulky. You can take a Travel Bed (Gentle Air Dr. Watters Portable Overnight Bed, from $60.75 at www.amazon.com, is popular) but frankly, if it's a question of a bed being too high, you can just pull the mattress onto the floor. Or with an older child, you can pack a collapsible bedrail.

In the end, it's best to remember two things about travel stuff: You should take only things you know are going to make your life easier, and if there is something you need but do not have, you can probably buy it wherever you are. You might even find products that are better than the ones at home. I still believe every parent with a newborn should travel to Paris or Italy to choose their stroller because the strollers are so much better there and -- even with the value of the dollar against the euro -- less expensive. And it's fun to have a sippy cup from Germany or a teething ring in the shape of a Maryland crab. Kids' products are everywhere, just like kids. That's why it's so great to travel with them.

The Ideas and Inspiration of Strollers

The idea of a baby stroller first came into being with a man named William Kent. He was a garden architect in England who had become very well known for his work. In 1733, the Duke of Devonshire asked Kent to build a means of transportation that would amuse his children. Kent obliged by constructing a shell shaped basket on wheels that the children could sit in. This was richly decorated and meant to be pulled by a goat or small pony. Kent’s idea caught on and soon other royal family owned similar contraptions.

In 1840, the baby carriage became extremely popular. Queen Victoria bought three carriages from Hitchings Baby Store. If you wanted to be part of high society, you had to own a baby carriage.

The carriages of those days were much different than today. They were built of wood or wicker and held together by expensive brass joints. These were sometimes fancy and became heavily ornamented works of art. Models were also named after royalty. Princess and Duchess were popular names, as well as Balmoral and Windsor

New Ideas

In June of 1889, a new carriage design came on to the public scene. William Richardson patented his idea of the first reversible stroller. The bassinet was designed so it could face out or in towards the parent. He also made structural changes to the carriage. Until then the axils did not allow each wheel to move separately. Richardson’s design allowed this which increased maneuverability of the carriages.

As the 1920s, began, World War I was coming to an end. Modern baby carriages were now an available to all families. They were also becoming safer as new features like larger wheels, brakes, deeper prams, and lower, sturdier frames began to appear. By 1950, these carriages were a must have for all families.

In 1965, Owen Maclaren, an aeronautical engineer, listened to his daughter complain about traveling from England to America with her heavy pram. Maclaren knew that she needed something with a light frame that could fold up compactly. Using his knowledge of aeroplanes, Maclaren designed a stroller with an aluminum frame and created the first true umbrella stroller. He then went on to found Maclaren which manufactured and sold his new design. The design took off and soon “strollers” were easier to transport and used everywhere.

10 Things to consider when choosing a baby stroller

  1. How many children do you plan on having? - If you plan on having more than one child you may consider getting a multiple occupancy stroller. Also, you may consider buying a higher quality stroller that will last long enough for a second or third child.

  2. Your lifestyle - Will you be taking short trips with the baby? Long trips? Will you be taking your baby jogging and exercising with you?

  3. Seatbelt & Restraint system - The buckles should be easy for you to latch and unlatch, yet comfortable for your baby or child. The belt should fit snugly around your baby's waist and have crotch straps that loop into the waist belt to prevent him or her from slipping out. For jogging strollers a five-point harness is more desirable to keep your baby more secure on rough terrain.

  4. Adjustable seat and canopy - A stroller with an adjustable seat that fully reclines is a must for infants that cannot support their heads yet and is comfortable for children who want to nap on the go. An adjustable canopy is a plus to protect your baby from the sun, rain, wind or cold.

  5. What is the frame material made from? - Strollers can be made of plastic, aluminum, steel or a combination of materials. Strollers made of steel or aluminum will usually last longer but there is the added weight. The lightweight strollers with more plastic are easy to move around, but keep in mind they may not last long.

  6. Washable fabric - Be sure the stroller has removable fabric that can be easily cleaned. Most strollers have removable seats that can be cleaned.

  7. Storage area - If you're going on a long outing, you will want storage area for all the stuff you will be toting around.

  8. Brakes, wide wheel base and swivel wheels - Be sure the stroller has brakes that lock the wheels in place, a wheel base that is wide for stability and wheels that swivel for easy maneuverability.

  9. Adjustable Handle height - With most strollers being designed for the average height person; if you are tall you will want an adjustable handle.

  10. Easy open and close mechanism - You will want a stroller that folds with the use of one hand or foot, leaving the other hand free to hold your baby.
